The best July day in Jets history

 July 27, 2022. The first day of Jets practice. Let's recap what an amazing day this was, actually in my mind, the greatest July day in Jets history.:

1. Mekhi Becton willingly accepted taking the role of right tackle, which in turn allows George Fant to play left tackles, where he is a superior player compared to when he plays right tackle. There was no tackle controversy, like many fans and media thought would happen. No, Coach Robert Saleh addressed it immediately.

2. The kickers! The Jets haven't had a credible placekicker on their roster since Jason Myers. Now they have 2. Veteran free agent Greg Zuerlein and last year's late signing Eddy Piniero have made all 8 kicks they have attempted thus far.

3. Denzel Mims. The most maligned wide receiver in all of football. The second round bust. Well he looks ready to play now. 4 catches on 5 targets, including 2 catches where he had to go up and get the ball. He knows his career is on the line and he playing like it. He may not be able to ascend higher than WR 5 on this roster, so even if he becomes trade bait, this is only helping his trade value, which enables GM Joe Douglas to fleece some poor team.

4. Zach Wilson completing of 11 passes. Two of those incompletions were dropped. I was reading words like poise and efficient. Love hearing those words to describe Zach!

5. Nobody on the PUP list. Becton Fant, Carl Lawson, and CJ Uzomah all came back. The one concern is rookie tight end Jeremy Ruckert with his plantar fasciitis, but he is only the 3rd tight end on this team, so he is not being counted on to make an immediate impact.

6. Joe Klecko named a finalist for the Hall of Fame. He is one of 12 finalists, and three of those players will be selected. The next big date is August 16 when the selection committee will host a Zoom meeting, and each member will nominate one player. I can't imagine any fanbase is as passionate about this Hall of Fame vote as the Jets because we as Jets have been waiting nearly a quarter century to see this happen. The only fanbase that could come close, in my mind, is Packers fans supporting Sterling Sharpe, one of Brett Favre's featured wide receivers. 

But at the same time, Favre is in the Hall of Fame. So is Reggie White. So is James Lofton. Conversely, that entire 1980's era of Jets football has been ignored in NFL history and the induction of Klecko would symbolize the league's respect and appreciate for that time. Let's hope it happens now!

 The Jets have been blessed to feature some excellent kick returners and punt returners throughout their 60 year history. We know the names: Bruce Harper, Chad Morton, Leon Washington, Brad Smith, Justin Miller, Joe McKnight, Andre Roberts, and now, Braxton Berrios. But one name from the 1980's gets constantly overlooked and his name is Jo-Jo Townsell. Townsell played his college ball at UCLA, along with future Jets teammates Freeman McNeil and Johnny Lynn. Drafted by the Jets in 1983, but decided not to come to New York immediately. Instead, he signed with the Los Angeles Express of the USFL, where he played from 1983 to 1985. Being a Nevada native and California resident, the opportunity to play closer to home appealed to him, but he was also partial to playing in a stadium with natural grass as opposed to artificial turf. After two years in the USFL, Townsell signed with the Jets, where he played his entire NFL career from 1985 to 1990. In that time, he totaled 70 receptions for

Jets-Stay or Go?

 The Jets are projected to have 23 total free agents hit the market this winter. Now when a team finishes a season 4-13, how many of those really need to come back? So in this column, I'm going to offer my perspective on every single free agent, whether they should come back, and what kind of a deal I would offer. In addition, I will also select a few players to cut to save on cap space. In a future post, I will look at outside free agency and who the Jets should bring in. Remember free agency begins March 16, so we have plenty of time to break that down. Cap Space = $54,366,000  (per overthecap.com) Cuts RB Ty Johnson ($965,000 savings) I give Ty credit for this much. He has some nifty footwork and he showed it on his two receiving touchdowns. But 9 drops and 8 pass pressures allowed?  RB La'Mical Perine ($709,000) The guy didn't get much of a chance, he wasn't suited to play in this offense. Perine truly strikes me as the ultimate JAG.
