Since I now have remote access to the SNY app, I can watch Mets games. So I thought I'd live track Mets vs Braves tonight.
7:22 First pitch: Spencer Strider pitches to Brandon Nimmo. This Strider guy has come out of nowhere to look like a pretty good starter, and I'm pretty sure it's all because of the stache.
7:30 Pete Alonso comes up with a runner on second with two out and strikes out on a fastball right down the middle.
7:36: This Atlanta lineup scares me with Adam Duvall in for Eddie Rosario. One thing David Peterson cannot do tonight is walk opposing batters. The Braves will likely hit a home run or two, but there cannot be runners on base if that happens.
7:41 Matt Olson is a good baseball player. But with those swings and misses, he'll never be Freddie Freeman.
7:43: With runners on first and third, Peterson strikes out that terrible human being Marcell Ozuna. Big time strikeout, he actually struck out the side. That's 13 straight games the Mets have not allowed a first inning run, the longest current streak in the majors.
7:52: Eduardo Escobar draws a two out walk, before Travis Jankowski flies out. Strider has a pretty compact delivery, but he still manages to hit the high 90s with his fastball. It seems like he's thrown 70 percent fastball, mixing in a slider and that's it. He only throws his changeup about 5 percent of the time, who knows if that arsenal can last for the long run.
8:01: Peterson rolls through Travis d'Arnaud, Duvall, and Orlando Arcia in the bottom of the second inning.
8:08: More Mazeika magic! Patrick Mazeika with a leadoff single off the slider. Now every Met has had a look at Strider, let's see what happens.
8:13: Top of the order can't even hit the ball out of the infield. Opportunity wasted. No score going to the bottom of the third.
8:22: Peterson allows a walk, but gets two flyouts to Brandon Nimmo. Side retired. Pretty much a pitcher's duel, but at least the Mets are making Strider work.
8:28: Alonso whiffs, the third consecutive Met to strike out. I like Luis Guillorme, but it is sad that he has to bat fifth in this lineup. Again Billy Eppler, bring us a bat!
8:33: Eduardo Escobar is a player I refuse to give up on! Line drive double past the shift, putting Guillorme on 3rd base with two down.
8:35: Jankowski hits a pretty sharp ground ball, but Dansby Swanson was right in position to field it and throw him out. Strider now up to 81 pitches through 4 innings. The sooner the Mets can get him out of the game, the better.
8:41: Another 1-2-3 inning for Peterson. The highlight was when he froze Ozuna with an inside fastball right on the black. Excellent job. 6 strikeouts thus far for DP. He's really emerging as a starter in next year's rotation after several of the current starters leave for free agency.
8:50: Nimmo draws a one out walk. Strider starting to lose his location a little bit. Nobody warming up in the bullpen yet. With Canha and Lindor up, this is a spot the Mets had better capitalize on. Maybe a hit and run?
8:52: Wild pitch and Nimmo makes it to second base!
8:53: Canha works another full count and strikes out on a slider in the dirt. Not acceptable.
8:56: Lindor triples to right field on a changeup as Acuna lets the ball go under his glove! 1-0 Mets!!!!
8:59: Alonso intentionally walked and Tyler Mazek comes into the game to face Guillorme.
9:03: Lazy fly out to left field. Mets settle for one run, but they take the lead heading to the bottom of the fifth. Slow moving game!
9:09: Peterson's slider is looking dynamite. Duvall was chasing it all over the place, had no idea what to do with it. Then Orlando Arcia gets caught looking on an inside fastball and Michael Harris grounds out. Peterson has dominated, allowing one hit and two walks in five innings, while striking out 8. Plus he has retired the last eight batters. He's at 84 pitches, so it's hard to imagine him going past 7 innings, even if all goes well.
9:18: Matzek rolls through the sixth inning. The Braves' bullpen has been quite the strength this season and we're seeing it now.
9:22: It took eight pitches, but Peterson struck out Acuna looking, and that slider floated right over the middle of the plate.
9:24: After walking Swanson on this third straight full count, Peterson needed a mound visit.
9:28: Matt Olson hit a ball home run distance that was foul by a few feet. Peterson hitting the end of the line.
9:29: And the bastard hits it out. Their evil fans continue to hate Native Americans. 2-1 Slaves.
9:33: Seth Lugo enters the game and immediately whiffs Riley and Ozuna. It is tough to imagine the Mets scoring on this bullpen with such a compromised lineup; their own bullpen cannot give the game away here.
9:39: Collin McHugh enters the game for the Braves in the 7th. I'm sure AJ Minter will get into the game next.
9:45: Mets do absolutely nothing in the seventh. Time is running out and fast.
9:50: Seth Lugo does what he always does, Gives up a home run. Duvall. 2 run shot. 4-1 and this game is all but over.
